Collector Snapshot
Church is a conceptually rich 2019 work exploring architecture, memory, ritual, and the coded emotional spaces tied to lived environments. The painting blends Gregory’s growing interest in structural mapping with symbolic gestures, creating a composition that feels both architectural and spiritual.
The work centers on a vertical grouping of pale column like forms, flanked by teal, black, ochre, and white passages that evoke pathways, thresholds, and structural scaffolding. Thin white linework cuts through the surface like architectural diagrams, while collaged fragments suggest stained glass, stonework, or textured remnants of older materials. Areas of cobalt blue, sage, and earth tones add emotional resonance and visual warmth.
The title, Church, deepens the interpretive frame. It emphasizes the spatial and symbolic role of environments where people gather, reflect, and process experience. Instead of literal depiction, the painting abstracts the idea of sanctuary and structure, turning it into a coded landscape of gesture, form, and memory.
Exhibited at Minneapolis Community and Technical College, this piece benefited from public visibility in an educational and community driven art setting.
Collectors seeking works that bridge architectural influence with emotional and symbolic interpretation will find Church to be a standout example from Gregory’s 2019 period.

Artwork Details
Full Description
Church is a layered mixed media abstraction that merges architectural influence with symbolic gesture. Vertical columns, geometric shapes, and interlocking lines suggest the skeletal framework of a built environment. The left column bears gestural purple marks that resemble both text and stained patterning, while adjacent sections of white, blue, and sage green create a rhythmic facade.
Collaged fragments with charcoal markings and textured surfaces anchor the lower center of the composition, resembling stone, worn surfaces, or foundational materials. White linear diagrams cross the piece like blueprints or structural mapping, creating a strong architectural logic beneath the expressive surface.
Warm ochres, teal blocks, and bold cobalt accents bring emotional contrast, while scraped textures and painterly gestures reveal layers of process and revision. The result is a painting that feels like a symbolic reconstruction of memory, space, and ritual rather than a literal representation of a church.
