“Namazu II”
"Namazu II"
by Gregory J. Rose
2017, Mixed Media on Panel, 24”x 24”
A charged, textural abstraction blending mythology, gesture, and layered collage. Exhibited in First of Many Steps Back. Unframed. Certificate of Authenticity included.
Collector Snapshot
Namazu II is an evocative early work centered on movement, rupture, and transformation. The title references the Namazu myth, a giant catfish said to cause earthquakes, symbolizing disruption followed by renewal. The painting mirrors that tension through a collision of textures, figures, symbols, and abstract forms.
The composition is dense and tactile. A central organic form in warm ochre and translucent pink appears almost creature-like, surrounded by charcoal outlines, scale-like textures, and smoke toned stains. Red gestural marks slice across the surface with energy, while layered collage introduces fragments of structure and color. The left side contrasts this organic presence with deep black and teal blocks, cracking textures, and atmospheric smudges.
Exhibited in First of Many Steps Back, Namazu II stood out for its emotional volatility and layered symbolism. The exhibition focused on reorientation and emergence, making this work’s sense of instability and rebuilding a fitting thematic contribution.
Collectors who appreciate early works that reveal the emotional and structural seeds of Gregory’s future series will find Namazu II especially meaningful.

Artwork Details
Full Description
Namazu II is a layered mixed media abstraction that blends figural suggestion, symbolic gesture, and richly textured surfaces. The central form resembles both a creature and an emotional imprint, surrounded by scale patterns, charcoal outlines, and layered color passages. The warm ochres and soft pinks carry an organic quality, disrupted by deep green, black, and teal blocks to the left.
Red marks cut across the surface with urgency, echoing written symbols or seismic interruptions. Small gestural notations, drawn lines, and scraped textures reveal the tension between internal emotional states and external forces. Collaged fragments introduce moments of structure and distortion, enhancing the work’s sense of movement and transformation.
This painting exemplifies Gregory’s early exploration of environmental tension, intuitive gesture, and the interplay between controlled linework and emotional abstraction.
