Collector Snapshot

Downtown is a significant early work from Gregory’s architectural abstraction period. Created in 2011, it reflects the foundational ideas that would later evolve into his well known coded and structural series.

The composition blends sketched architectural lines, layered collage, and distressed surfaces to emulate the feel of a city wall worn by time, movement, and human presence. Warm taupe and concrete grays anchor the environment while vibrant reds, oranges, and blues punctuate the piece with energy. Transferred imagery suggests posters, signage, or figures caught in motion, contributing to the sense of a place shaped by memory and daily life.

This piece has not been exhibited and comes directly from the artist’s early archive. It is ideal for collectors who want to anchor their collection with a work that predates Gregory’s later conceptual systems and reveals the early formation of his structural language.

Artwork Details

Full Description

Downtown is a textured mixed media composition that merges urban structure with abstract visual memory. The surface consists of layered collage fragments, scraped areas, transferred imagery, and hand drawn architectural lines that create the sense of a city sketched from shifting recollection rather than direct observation.

Taupe and gray tones form the architectural ground, while vibrant red and orange elements appear like signals or construction markings. Blue and teal passages introduce atmosphere and depth. Black linework traces implied sidewalks, building edges, and pathways through a densely built environment. Collaged fragments hint at posters, signage, or figures, giving the impression of a lived space layered with history.

This work exemplifies Gregory’s early interest in environment, structure, and the psychological experience of place, making it an important origin point for understanding his trajectory.
