“1980 Proton Blast”
"1980 Proton Blast"
by Gregory J. Rose
2025, Mixed Media On Panel, 24“x24”
A high-density abstraction composed of layered architectural grids, explosive mark-making, and accelerated visual pathways that register rupture, velocity, and survival under pressure. Exhibited in the Dauntless Indignant Geography Solo Exhibition at NE SCULPTURE | Gallery Factory. Unframed. Certificate of Authenticity included.
Collector Snapshot
1980 Proton Blast intensifies the Polyptych by confronting impact and momentum. Inspired by the koan, “Can the eye capture every star at night?”, this work asks what happens when speed, memory, and responsibility collide faster than the mind can stabilize.
The painting draws from years marked by compression and acceleration. Systems rebooted in the cold. Time collapsing into numbers. Survival learned through repetition rather than reflection. The composition holds the energy of movement that cannot pause, where resilience becomes reactive rather than chosen.
As the second work in the Polyptych, 1980 Proton Blast functions as the surge. It expands the endurance introduced in Fireflies and Fairies Throwdown into velocity and overload. For collectors, this piece captures the moment when survival demands propulsion rather than stillness.

Artwork Details
Inspired by the Koan:
“Can the eye capture every star at night?”
He’s so strong, and resilient. Why have you traveled so far from home?
Is it a thrown or skipped stone?
95,96, 98 2000-2001.
He rebooted the system drive in the snow.
Can’t you hear the soft crunch of footsteps head to devour
Hot salad.
He functions best when he wakes during Ambrosia hour.
Fucking salad again, as he spent his last coin on his anointments into fatherhood.
Where he dreamed of Fireflies and Fairies dancing upon the child’s face.
As they dreamed of far-off lands, they would someday explore.
He abhors the fact he’s not back in the junk lots and alleyways with broken glass
like next to mom’s apartment and Am Vets.
Vets on the block fighting the demons from the past spat overseas.
Little man don’t get caught up in this shit.
You smart and got a good heart.
There’s no glory while they watch you fall apart.
So let the phoenix rise young ram.
Stand, stand, stand tall and face up.
Look everyone in the eyes.
That’s how you survive.
And survive he did, but at what expense?
Like Fences- it was fear that his dad struggled to express.
So—he’s like a war-torn Vet with no war to point to overseas.
He looks in the mirror every day and all that he mutters.
It’s Me.
Take that next step, take that leap into the abyss.
His DNA is stardust and his
Angels are pissed.
Full Description
1980 Proton Blast is constructed from tightly interwoven grids, explosive diagonal pathways, and dense accumulations of marks that refuse visual rest. Greens, purples, yellows, and black interrupts collide across the surface, creating a sense of constant ignition and redirection.
The composition feels pressurized, as if systems are firing simultaneously without sequence. Lines overlap and override one another, producing a visual field charged with urgency and noise. Light appears fragmented and unstable, reinforcing the sensation of speed without resolution. The painting reads as propulsion mapped into structure.

Market Relevance
The Dauntless Indignant Geography Series occupies a distinct position within contemporary abstraction by merging Zen inquiry, Black cultural memory, and spatial mapping. 1980 Proton Blast amplifies this inquiry through speed, rupture, and overload, offering collectors an exhibited work that captures survival under acceleration rather than reflection.

Price Growth of Mixed Media Works (2018–2025)
“1980 Proton Blast frames survival as velocity rather than pause.
Through explosive structure and compressed systems, the work records the cost of movement without rest. As the second panel of the Polyptych, it expands endurance into propulsion, deepening the series’ meditation on power, pressure, and persistence.”
