“Down Low”
"Down Low"
by Gregory J. Rose
2025, Mixed Media On Panel, 24“x24”
A densely layered abstraction built from compressed grids, downward-pulling marks, and intersecting color fields that register gravity, memory, and consequence. Exhibited in the Dauntless Indignant Geography Solo Exhibition at NE SCULPTURE | Gallery Factory. Unframed. Certificate of Authenticity included.
Collector Snapshot
Down Low occupies the middle register of the Triptych, where memory deepens and awareness is tested. Inspired by the koan, “What does the rooster crow to the still rabbit?”, this work moves away from initiation and into the weight of experience.
The painting draws from moments where childhood freedom begins to encounter consequence. Bikes cut through neighborhoods and cemeteries. Spider bites mark labor among tombstones. Music, substances, fear, and bravado blur together as boundaries are learned through misstep rather than instruction. Discipline is no longer abstract. It is enforced, corrected, and felt.
As the central work of the Triptych, Down Low functions as the descent. It bridges the moral altitude of Up Top and the stalled reckoning of Too Slow. For collectors, this piece carries particular gravity as the emotional and psychological core of the three-part work.

Inspired by the Koan:
“What does the rooster crow to the still rabbit?”
He’s touched the morning dew as the sunlight refracts through the cold droplet of water upon the blade of grass in the backyard of his childhood home.
Watch the ants care for the Peonies.
Mom liked the pink blooms—
or were they white.
Mom used Coppertone—and we roamed the neighborhood on bikes
Testing skills and fear in cemeteries.
Forgotten dreams and mistakes laid to rest in one place
And having your first kiss at halfmoon was a thing to do.
Spider bites from working the zones of tombstones so we could buy enough pot, LS D and Mad Dog 20/20
Way before you thought Tik Tok was an app.
Your mama and your mama’s mama and her mama
Slap the taste out your mouth.
For being disrespectful.
Auntie and Nanny didn’t play—
Unless it was the numbers.
And the 2’s better be hitting.
I’m not—Fucking Playing with this shit
Or—y’all
No

The boys had to sweep, do the dishes and clean the kitchen floor.
Before playing Coleco vision.
X-Ray vision—
Simple up, down, left and right.
What’s right is Right
What’s wrong is wrong.
You don’t know the words to this damn song.
This was my jam back in the day.
Man, you know you wrong.
Shit—man
Then what’s the name of the song?
Fuck You!
And we keep—
Keeping on.
Full Description
Down Low is constructed from layered grids, repeated hash marks, and intersecting linear systems that compress the surface inward. Blues dominate the upper register, while warmer reds and yellows fracture beneath, creating a visual field that feels weighted and unsettled.
Marks overlap, cancel, and redirect one another, echoing the experience of testing limits without yet understanding consequence. The composition feels crowded and restless, as if memory itself is pressing downward. The painting does not offer resolution. It records the accumulation of pressure, where movement continues but clarity begins to falter.

Market Relevance
The Dauntless Indignant Geography Series occupies a distinct position within contemporary abstraction by merging Zen inquiry, Black cultural memory, and spatial mapping. Down Low deepens the Triptych’s narrative by situating lived experience, discipline, and miscalculation at the center of its inquiry.

Price Growth of Mixed Media Works (2018–2025)
“Down Low captures the accumulation of consequence, where freedom gives way to gravity.
Through compressed structure and layered disruption, the work records the moment when movement continues but certainty dissolves. As the core of the Triptych, it holds the tension that makes ascent and delay meaningful.”
