“Shadow Boxing”
"Shadow Boxing"
by Gregory J. Rose
2025, Mixed Media On Panel, 24“x24”
A compressed abstract composition built from high-contrast fields, layered black-and-white structures, and activated linear marks that fracture and reassemble across the surface. Exhibited in the Dauntless Indignant Geography Solo Exhibition at NE SCULPTURE | Gallery Factory. Unframed. Certificate of Authenticity included.
Collector Snapshot
Shadow Boxing functions as a visual koan centered on reflection, fracture, and internal confrontation. Inspired by the question, “Is it the inside or outside reflection shattered in a broken mirror?”, the work situates conflict not as spectacle, but as an interior condition shaped by pressure, memory, and resilience.
Within the Dauntless Indignant Geography Series, Shadow Boxing channels frequency, light, and shadow into a tightly controlled spatial field. The composition reflects the formation of identity under strain, where energy circulates through absence, repetition, and resistance. For collectors, this exhibited work represents a psychologically charged and structurally disciplined meditation on survival, perception, and self-definition.

Poem written by the artist:
Can they match his energy?
The frequency—pigmented black and white as the light reflected in holy spaces
Emulating the world of their gods.
Material described in the eyes
Light dancing on the raindrops disrupting the flow of the oil that floats on top
He still drops the groceries in the rain filled pothole outside the crib
Cold, wet, absent of the grit and spit.
Oh, how he longs for the comfort of the night and quiet that fills the
Room with the volume matching the rent party and train mixing kissing beats
Passing by in thin air.
He was sweet kindhearted but blind.
In the heart not the eyes.

Full Description
Shadow Boxing presents a high-contrast field of black and white forms disrupted by subtle tonal shifts and layered linear gestures. Pigmented blacks press against lighter grounds, while looping and angular marks move through the surface like echoes of impact and recoil. Areas of opacity and translucence overlap, revealing accumulated decisions beneath the surface.
The composition reads as a fractured mirror, where reflection is unstable and movement is constant. Visual rhythms suggest interruption, hesitation, and recalibration, mirroring the emotional terrain described in the artist’s writing. The work holds tension between stillness and aggression, mapping how internal conflict shapes perception, endurance, and clarity.

Price Growth of Mixed Media Works (2018–2025)
“Shadow Boxing operates as a meditation on fractured reflection and internal resistance.
Through stark contrast, layered disruption, and controlled rhythm, the work visualizes how identity forms under pressure and persists through repetition. As part of the Dauntless Indignant Geography Series, it affirms that confrontation, when turned inward, becomes a pathway toward clarity rather than collapse.”
