“February Grid System”
"February Grid System"
by Gregory J. Rose
2025, Mixed Media On Panel, 24“x24”
A tightly organized abstraction composed of repeated vertical bars, layered grids, and intersecting linear signals set against a light ground. Exhibited in the Dauntless Indignant Geography Solo Exhibition at NE SCULPTURE | Gallery Factory. Unframed. Certificate of Authenticity included.
Collector Snapshot
February Grid System functions as a visual koan centered on endurance, cold, and the tension between internal heat and external exposure. Inspired by the question, “Why does the heart remain cold near a fire and the flesh burn with the touch of ice?”, the work maps survival as a condition shaped by weather, silence, and memory.
Within the Dauntless Indignant Geography Series, February Grid System reflects the artist’s experience of movement through extreme environments, where repetition becomes a method of staying present and structure becomes a means of control. The painting reads as a disciplined internal map, offering collectors an exhibited work that holds both psychological weight and formal restraint.

Artwork Details
Inspired by the Koan:
“Why does the heart remain cold near a fire and the flesh burn with the touch of ice?”
Poem written by the artist:
He walks a lot you know.
Have you ever walked the streets in -35 below?
Have you ever heard the volume of your mind in the dead silence.
As you witness the physical death before your eyes.
Your breath helps keep tabs on your ability to last in this air.
This thin air.
His dad used to say, “you are on thin ice—buddy”!
And he was the leader during the Boy Scout winter jamboree.
Carrots and Peas with buttered bread.
Beans and Franks and buttered bread.
From the can he ate until he fled.
To a tundra of light, so cold the birds no longer sing until the presence of spring.
Blinded by past shadows
The clouds are nonexistent or too thin to follow.
So now he guesses which dragons are flying out of the smoke bellows.
Along highways near the water and hoods.
On the edge of the downtown and quickly isolated by highways
Black neighborhoods.
That’s where the air is sick.
And the ice is thick.
Slick was his name or his game.
It was never supposed to come to fame.
It was escape from—
Consistent pain.
Make sure you wear sunglasses.
From the death, the pain, and emotional flight.
Came the light.
Son—now those are what they call—
Substations.
Electrical Lineman Communications
Full Description
February Grid System presents a compressed field of repeated vertical marks and layered grid structures rendered in muted olive, mustard, black, and pale ground tones. Electric accents and subtle color interruptions punctuate the surface, while linear gestures traverse the composition like measured steps across uncertain terrain. The accumulation of marks suggests rhythm, persistence, and breath, reinforcing a sense of time passing through repetition.
The painting’s surface reveals careful buildup and restraint, echoing the experience of navigating cold, silence, and isolation described in the artist’s writing. Structure becomes a survival mechanism, and repetition becomes a form of meditation. The work holds tension between exposure and control, mapping how endurance is built one measured movement at a time.

Price Growth of Mixed Media Works (2018–2025)
“February Grid System visualizes endurance as a measured act of repetition and restraint.
Through disciplined structure, muted tension, and accumulated marks, the work transforms cold, silence, and exposure into a meditative map of survival. As part of the Dauntless Indignant Geography Series, it affirms that persistence itself becomes a form of power.”
