Collector Snapshot
Fireflies and Fairies Throwdown opens the Polyptych with a meditation on endurance and self-recognition. Inspired by the koan, “Can the eye capture every star at night?”, the work asks how much light one can hold while moving through darkness without losing direction.
This painting draws from lived cycles of departure and return. Childhood spaces give way to distance, responsibility, and fatherhood. Snow becomes a site of reboot. Junk lots and alleyways remain present even as life moves elsewhere. The composition holds strength and fatigue simultaneously, capturing the tension between resilience and cost.
As the first work in the Polyptych, Fireflies and Fairies Throwdown establishes the emotional register for the sequence that follows. It introduces survival not as triumph, but as continuation. For collectors, this piece functions as the entry point into a multi-part meditation on endurance, memory, and becoming.

Artwork Details
Inspired by the Koan:
“Can the eye capture every star at night?”
Poem written by the artist:
He’s so strong, and resilient. Why have you traveled so far from home?
Is it a thrown or skipped stone?
95,96, 98 2000-2001.
He rebooted the system drive in the snow.
Can’t you hear the soft crunch of footsteps head to devour
Hot salad.
He functions best when he wakes during Ambrosia hour.
Fucking salad again, as he spent his last coin on his anointments into fatherhood.
Where he dreamed of Fireflies and Fairies dancing upon the child’s face.
As they dreamed of far-off lands, they would someday explore.
He abhors the fact he’s not back in the junk lots and alleyways with broken glass
like next to mom’s apartment and Am Vets.
Vets on the block fighting the demons from the past spat overseas.
Little man don’t get caught up in this shit.
You smart and got a good heart.
There’s no glory while they watch you fall apart.
So let the phoenix rise young ram.
Stand, stand, stand tall and face up.
Look everyone in the eyes.
That’s how you survive.
And survive he did, but at what expense?
Like Fences- it was fear that his dad struggled to express.
So—he’s like a war-torn Vet with no war to point to overseas.
He looks in the mirror every day and all that he mutters.
It’s Me.
Take that next step, take that leap into the abyss.
His DNA is stardust and his
Angels are pissed.
Full Description
Fireflies and Fairies Throwdown is constructed from layered architectural blocks, luminous linework, and punctuated dark forms that create a shifting map of interior and exterior space. Teals, greens, and muted yellows dominate the surface, interrupted by black notations and pale pathways that suggest movement through unstable terrain.
The composition feels navigational rather than descriptive. Forms stack and overlap like systems rebuilt under pressure. Light appears in fragments, not floods, echoing how clarity arrives in moments rather than permanence. The surface carries the sensation of standing upright while bearing accumulated weight, where survival requires both resilience and vision.

Price Growth of Mixed Media Works (2018–2025)
“Fireflies and Fairies Throwdown frames survival as an ongoing act rather than a resolved victory.
Through layered structure and fractured illumination, the work honors endurance, responsibility, and the quiet recalibration required to continue forward. As the opening panel of the Polyptych, it sets the emotional and conceptual terrain for the expansive journey that follows.”
